The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s post-Brexit alternative to the Erasmus Programme. It is an ambitious initiative that offers funding to support global study and work placements for UK learners. Unlike Erasmus which focussed on Europe, this offers truly global opportunities to UK learners. It is a generous and innovative scheme, which makes all sorts of opportunities possible for durations of 2 weeks to 12 months.
Further Afield is a membership organisation that supports FE sector organisations to benefit from The Turing Scheme opportunity. Further Afield members can access Turing Scheme funding right now through any of our partnered projects – in the period between now and 31st August 2024.
Meanwhile, we are also inviting members to become part of our bid for funded placements in 2024-25. Become a member and we will support you in obtaining funding, either directly as a bidder or in our consortium.
Further Afield’s expert partners oversee delivery of international placements, while our organisation provides support to help FE sector organisations apply for and understand and manage this opportunity.
In relation to the Turing Scheme and global opportunities for learners, the FE sector trails behind higher education (HE) – we want to change that. HE organisations are big and well-funded, they tend to have expert bid-writers and staff members dedicated to Turing Scheme administration, our support helps our FE sector members compete. Our mission is to level the playing field by unlocking more opportunities under the Turing Scheme for a wide and diverse collection of FE institutions. We achieve this by offering comprehensive end-to-end support to our members throughout the application process – we offer this free.
Our project partnership was originally established within the HE sector, Further Afield’s affiliated projects have grown to become a key partner of the Turing Scheme for numerous UK universities, our delivery partner Gotoco hold multiple agreements with universities across the UK – they even won an award during their role as Oxford University’s highest volume placement partner for students going abroad. Our aim now is to advocate for FE organisations, ensuring they become pivotal in harnessing the benefits of the Turing Scheme.
Despite FE institutions submitting a significantly higher number of applications for Turing Scheme funds, they are less likely to be successful – usually only receiving approx. half the funding that the HE sector gets (source). We are committed to changing this, we want to position the FE sector as a leader in the Turing Scheme initiative.
Our leaders and network partners have been part of the Turing Scheme since its pilot in 2021, facilitating over 2,500 individual placements across 15 countries, including China, Thailand, Guatemala, Colombia and all over Europe. We have a 100% success rate in securing funding. Our goto placement partner is award winning and holds nearly 700 reviews at an average 4.8/5 stars on Trustpilot.
As we enter the fourth year of the Turing Scheme, we are excited to extend an invitation to new organisations to join us as members. Members will access our consortium’s funded opportunities, further expanding the reach and impact of the FE sector in international education. Join us to explore the possibilities to take your organisation further afield!
